The Beautiful Pool

It's gonna be a long hot summer

Round of 16

My dream of sitting in a cafe in Bogotá and watching COL win the World Cup evaporated yesterday in the worst possible way; penalty kicks. So it goes.

Nobody picked the winner in all eight games in the latest round. The best result was 6 of the eight, which is still an impressive performance. Well done Jeroen B, Jim T, Joep B, Moniqe P, Ozgur T, Sadhana V, Sandra MK, Tony D and Yukari S.

And speaking of Tony D, he is now at the top of the leaderboard, all by himself. Also impressive. But his picks include BRA winning a couple more games, which of course is impossible now that they have been eliminated by, checks notes, NOR! Some of the other leaders have more opportunity to pick up points so Tony D is in for a rough ride.

Chris H has carved out a comfortable position at the bottom of the rankings. The only team in his remaining picks that has not been eliminated is ARG. So I think he has a firm grip on the Mercy prize.

We are getting near the end now, and even if you are not in the running for a prize, I hope you will stick around for the next update, which will come after the quarter finals.

Round of 32 Results

So, I have a question for you. VAR: Is it a good thing, or bad?

It interrupts the flow of the game and undermines the authority of the ref. But it makes sure that all important calls are made accurately. On balance, is it worth it?

The Bitter Truth

Here’s what we all got wrong: GER. Everyone picked GER to defeat PAR and everyone was wrong.

Here’s what we all got right: FRA, ENG, ESP and ARG. But COD and CPV made us all very nervous for a while.

Here’s what I think is really impressive: There were three of us who picked 15 of the 16 winners in the Round of 32 (obviously, GER made sure that nobody got all 16). Please recognize the uncanny skills of Rachel P, Sherman H, and Tony D.

Without further ado, here are the standings at the end of the Round of 32:

You will notice that Cindy B has been dislodged from the basement by Chris H and Tommy MH. You might also remember that Chris H was expelled from the Beautiful Pool because he didn’t get his Knock-Out Round picks in by the deadline. He then filed an appeal, and we held a special meeting of the Rules Interpretation Tribunal, where Chris H was successful in arguing that he had submitted his picks, but sent them to the wrong email address. The Tribunal, which is me, voted to readmit him and he promptly dropped to the bottom of the rankings along with Tommy MH.

Here are the complete standings, so you can see if you have any hope of catching up. Note that I changed the format to show teams that have been eliminated in red. I think this makes it a little easier to read.

NewbieGrizzled VetProdigals
105.6102.5103.6

The Newbies expanded their lead to a full 2 points over the Prodigals, while the Grizzled Vets are turning in a pretty sad performance, falling behind the Prodigals by 1.1 points.

See you after the next Round.

Recap Redux

Thank you to everyone who responded to my pleas to get your picks in to me. I know it was a tight timeline, but nearly everyone made it. Unfortunately we lost Chris H, Dario P and Rick C. I’m guessing they experienced some combination of technical difficulties and competing priorities. It’s hard to believe, but I suppose this isn’t the most important thing in everyone’s lives. Anyway, we will miss them.

Among the 59 of us who remain, the most popular pick for 2026 World Cup winner, by far, is FRA.

The previous winners, ARG, are second – but it isn’t really close. There are, of course, the die-hards who will always root for ENG and GER, perhaps wishing for a 1966 rematch. And then there are the outliers: a single vote for each of BEL, COL, JPN and POR. Brave souls.

Given all the spreadsheet glitches that we just lived through, it is particularly important that you check my work. Here are your compiled predictions, using the same basic format as for the Group Stage. Please get out your magnifying glass and make sure everything is perfect.

The next update to the standings will be after the Round of 32, on or about 4 July.

PS: Almost everyone picked CAN and BRA to win the first two Knock-Out matches, so the standings haven’t changed much.

Status Report: Knock-Out Picks

Here is where things stand at T-minus-3-hours-and-20-minutes

I am still waiting for picks from the people on the list below. If you are one of them, please send it to me right away. I need to receive it before the start of the BRA vs JPN match at 1:00 pm EDT today.

I also have partial submissions from Rick C and Anil K – but I need these to be complete.

Click HERE to go to get the entry forms, and to upload once completed.

I think the forms will all work with Google Sheets now.

If you can’t or don’t want to use the upload form, simply email your pick to me at stuart@brannan.org.

This has been a wild and crazy 24 hours, but we are nearly there. Thank you for your patience and co-operation.

Wake up, your picks are due

It is 3 am, and Stuart is fast asleep.

This is BeautifulPoolBot, working the graveyard shift. Stuart asked me to remind you that your Knock-Out picks are due very soon.

So skip breakfast and submit them tout de suite.

Google Sheets Users

As I feared, the Knock-Out Entry Form doesn’t always work properly with Google Sheets.

But, don’t worry, I have a work-around.

If you need to open the entry form with Google Sheets, I have created special versions. They don’t have the lines connecting the various matches, but otherwise they work just the same.

If you need them, you can download them here.

Knock-Out Entry Forms for Google Sheets Users

Once you have completed the form, save it to your PC (File > Download > Microsoft Excel), and then upload it on the Rules and Regulations page.

If this doesn’t work for you, you can visit your local public library, where they almost always have copies of Excel you can use.

And if worst comes to worst, you can print your entries on a hard copy, scan it, and upload that.

What a pain in the arse. Excuse my French.

Jim R is a 2-time Beautiful Pool Grizzled Vet who didn’t appear on the leaderboard after the first or second round of Group Stage matches. Somehow, he managed to earn a very, very respectable 75 points when it mattered. He is the sole winner of the Group Stage prize of $290.00 (which is 25% of the total pool money, less $20). Congratulations Jim R.

The Newbie Holland8 team was just a shade behind him, followed by Prodigal Donna M and GV Stephen B. We should all be in awe of their accomplishments. I am.

Here are the average scores for each of the 3 groups.

NewbieGrizzled VetProdigals

Newbies have a modest lead over the Vets at this point. The Prodigals are looking pretty weak, to be honest. I hope this doesn’t discourage them. There is still lots of Beautiful Pool left.

Here are the complete results. In the table, I have indicated the teams that are eliminated by using strikeout text.

Knock-Out Round

Everyone submitted their CAN vs RSA pick by the deadline, so we are in good shape for the next phase.

Don’t forget to send in your Knock-Out picks before the start of the BRA vs JPN match tomorrow (Monday, 29 June).

One final hint: It may not be obvious, but the green cells in the Knock-Out Entry Form are drop-down menus showing the teams in each match. You should start with the two outside columns, for the Round of 32, and work your way inwards.

Knock-Out Entry Forms Available

The Group Stage is over and it is now time to make your picks for the Knock-Out Round. The entry sheet comes in two flavours: One for those who picked CAN to win today’s match, and the other for those who picked RSA. Please make sure you download the correct version.

This is the entry form if you picked CAN in today’s game:

This is the entry form if you picked RSA in today’s game:

If possible, please upload your completed entry form using the form on the Rules and Regulations page. Click HERE. You can email it to me too, but the upload is easier for me.

Laggards:

There are still a few of you who haven’t picked a CAN vs RSA winner. If you are one of those, you must click HERE immediately to make your pick before you download the appropriate entry form.

Deadlines:

I need all CAN vs RSA picks before kick-off at 3 pm EDT today.

I need all the entry forms before kick-off of the BRA vs JPN match at 1 pm EDT tomorrow.

Sundry:

If you have any questions, please comment on this post or email me at stuart@brannan.org.

I will share the pool standings, including the winner of the Group Stage prize, later today. Stay tuned.

Some of you used Google Sheets to fill out the Group Stage entry form. I think it should work for this one too, but I haven’t tested it. Please use caution.

I don’t think I made any mistakes, but due the time pressure to get these out, it is possible that something might have slipped between the proverbial cracks. If you see something, say something, so that I can fix it.

Status Report: CAN vs RSA Picks

It seems that my last minute duct-tape solution to buy some time this weekend is working, mostly.

A great many of you have sent in your pick for the CAN vs RSA match that will take place tomorrow, Sunday 28 June. Thank you!

But I am still waiting for picks from the people on the list below. If you are one of them, please send it to me today. If you are related to one of these people, or are married to them, or just run into them on the street, please convey the urgency:

If you can’t or don’t want to use the form, simply email your pick to me at stuart@brannan.org.

The last of the Group Stage matches will be played today, and once they are done, I will upload the entry form for the Knock-Out Round. Keep a close eye on your email and/or the beautifulpool.org website tomorrow.

Please Read: Special CAN:RSA Pick Process

Hey guys – The Beautiful Pool brain trust has worked through the night to come up with a way to alleviate the time crunch this weekend. Here’s the plan (please pay attention):

  • The Group Stage will not be completed until Saturday, 27 June.

BUT

  • We already know that the first Knock-Out match, on Sunday, 28 June, will be between CAN and RSA. So, you can pick the winner of that match NOW.
  • You can do this by completing the form below, or simply by emailing your pick to me at stuart@brannan.org.

Click HERE to submit the special emergency entry form for the RSA:CAN match of the Knock-Out Round.

On Sunday, 28 June, I will upload the entry form for the remaining Knock-Out matches and you will need to complete the rest of your picks and submit it to me before kick-off of match 76 at 1:00 pm EDT (5:00 pm UTC) on Monday, 29 June.

It will still be tight, but you should have at least 24 hours to make your picks.

I apologize for this complication to the process, but it’s not my fault. As usual, I blame FIFA.

Getting into the swing of things

Warning: Time Crunch Ahead

We are now 2 matches into the Group Stage, and I have updated the Beautiful Pool standings. See below.

But more importantly, the final Group Stage fixtures are this Saturday, 27 June and the first Knock-Out Round fixture is the very next day, on Sunday 28 June. This weekend is going to be insanely busy, especially because I will be out-of-town until Saturday.

I will make the entry form for the Knock-Out Round available as soon as the final standings are known, but there will be very little time for you to make your picks and send them to me. (I thought there was a 2 or 3 day gap, but I must have misread the schedule). There can be no lallygagging.

Please be ready.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your Beautiful Pool leaders…

Now that every team has played two matches, some of the quirkiness has been squeezed out of the standings. For example, when I calculated the results after one game, SCO was in first place in Group C, ahead of BRA and MAR. There was no way they could hold on to that.

As a result, the Beautiful Pool leaders look quite different now. Only Kyoko T and Sherman H have retained a place on the list. The rest emerged from the pack to take their place of honour.

The Newbies are doing very well, it seems. There are 4 Newbies (and one Prodigal) among the top 5 leaders; so, we seem to have attracted some very knowledgeable, or lucky, competitors for our little enterprise. We shall see.

You can see exactly how you are doing by downloading the full results here. Don’t worry, unless you are Cindy B you aren’t in last place.

Remember Joachim Klement, at Panmure Liberum, who has a system that has perfectly predicted World Cup winners since 2014? I previously shared his predictions, and if you had blindly followed them you would now have 70 points, very much in the middle of the pack.

A Belated Explanation

After sending the last update, I was reminded that I didn’t explain how I calculated your rankings. I will now rectify that oversight.

Remember that you get two points for correctly predicting each team that will advance from the Group Stage to the Knock-Out Round. 32 teams will advance, so that makes a total of 64 possible points if you get it exactly right. You get an additional point if you correctly pick the position of the team coming 1st and/or 2nd in each group. There are 12 groups, so that means you could earn another 24 points for getting the advancing teams in the right order. The maximum possible score for the Group Stage is therefore 88 points (64 + 24 = 88).

To determine the scores that I used to see who is ahead while the Group Stage is still underway, I just use the position of the teams in each group after the 1st and 2nd round of games.

Glad that’s settled and sorted and done and dusted.

Epilogue

If you have gotten this far, you might have forgotten the warning at the top of this update. Please go back and read it again.

I’m serious.

A Useless Update

I will make this quick, because I think it is essentially meaningless. After the first games of the Group Stage were complete, these were the Beautiful Pool leaders. I only showed the top 4 scores, because there is a massive tie for 5th place.

In this elite group of 9 competitors, there are 4 Newbies, and Prodigal Sherman is in sole possession of 1st place. This doesn’t bode well for us Vets.

RankNamePoints

4Jason P (N)59
4Jim T (GV)59

Since some teams have now completed 2 games, these results are already obsolete. But I thought you might want see who got off to a fast start.

Recap etc.

Now that all the entries have been compiled and verified (you did double check your entry, right?), I have a few observations. First, every one of our entries is different; there are no duplicates. So every one of us will have a slightly different take on the results as they start coming in.

What we picked

Although none are identical, there is a lot of consistency in our picks. This chart shows how many of us have picked each team to survive the Group Stage (on the website, you can click the image to enlarge).

We are unanimous that 11 countries will advance: ARG, BEL, BRA, COL, ENG, ESP, FRA, GER, MEX, POR, and URU. The next 8 are very close to unanimous, with only 1 or 2 people lacking confidence in CAN, CRO, KOR, MAR, NED, USA, JPN and SUI.

Actually, that’s not very surprising. The strong teams will almost certainly advance. Upsets can and do happen (viz. GER in 2018 and 2022), but the format this year allows 8 of the 12 teams in 3rd place to advance. That’s mainly a money grab by FIFA, but it also reduces the chances of an unexpected elimination at the Group Stage.

We are also unanimous that poor HAI won’t make the cut.

Other than HAI, at least one person has picked every team to advance. It might look brave, but doing well in the pool often depends on picking the upsets. If you just go with the favourites, you are up against the bulk of the other participants. If, on the other hand, you strike out on your own by picking, say, CPV or JOR and things break your way, then you look brilliant.

Your fellow poolers

Only 30 of us are returning from the 2024 Pool. I call this group our Grizzled Veterans. Of the remaining 32, exactly half are complete neophytes, or Newbies. The others are folks who, for one reason or another, missed out on the 2024 Pool, but were in a previous version. Let’s call this group the Prodigals.

Last time out, the Grizzled Vets average score was slightly higher than the Newbies (I didn’t keep track of Prodigals back then). Let’s see how each group does this time. You can tell which group you are in from the list of picks. The initials after your name are for Grizzled Veteran (GV), Newbie (N) or Prodigal (P).

Geographically, the vast majority of us are Canadian residents (but, this being Canada, there are a variety of international backgrounds, of course). Some of these Canucks are taking part with heavy hearts because their ancestral ITA team has failed to qualify for a World Cup since 2014. We also have some participation from the Dutch (both Newbies and Prodigals), a couple folks from the USA and several Spanish residents (both permanent and transient). We even have a newbie from the UK.

Comments

Some of you have already added comments on the website, and I think that is great. I encourage anyone and everyone to chime in at any time. Eventually (or maybe already), you will tire of hearing from me, that’s just natural. It is good to have some different voices. And some of you are much more knowledgeable about soccer/football/fútbol than I am.

This update is already much too long. Thanks for your patience. Talk later.

Off we go

It’s all about us

There are 62 of us coming along on this 2026 Beautiful Pool joyride, and I couldn’t be happier. That is the largest number since 2014, and a significant increase from the 2024 outing. Thank you to everyone who convinced their friends, relatives or colleagues to join in.

Quality Control

This file includes all of the picks that you submitted. It is IMPORTANT that you download this file and check to make sure that I have correctly transferred your picks to the master mainframe computer database thingy.

Each column corresponds to a position in a Group. For example the “A1” column lists the teams that were shown as coming 1st in Group A. The “A2” column lists the picks for 2nd place in Group A and “A3” is the 3rd place team (if chosen). Same for the other Groups.

If something doesn’t look right, let me know and I will double check that it matches the entry form you submitted.

In the first column, I have included your category after your name. It is either GV for Grizzled Vet, N for Newbie or P for Prodigal. More on that later.

What to expect from me

Not much, actually. At least not right away.

I will put together a summary of which teams we collectively have chosen to advance, and maybe I’ll send an update after all teams have played 2 games. But mostly I’ll leave you alone for a while.

After all the teams advancing from the Group Stage are known, I will make the 2nd entry form available for download. Then you will need to pick the winner for each one of the 32 Knock-Out Stage matches. The second entry form needs to be returned to me before the first Knock-Out match on 28 June.

FAIR WARNING: Timing will be tight, as the first Knock-Out Stage match is only 3 days after the last Group Stage match. Please be ready when the time comes.

For now, “Let’s Play Ball”. (Wrong sports lingo, but you know what I mean).

It is happening again

Together, you and I, we did it. At time of writing, there are 45 participants in the 2026 Beautiful Pool, easily surpassing the 2024 level. I think that is splendid news.

I’m still waiting for entries from several folks who told me they would participate. At this point, they fall into one of two categories:

  • They might be hard core World Cup enthusiasts, who are absorbing all the latest info to refine their picks. Or…
  • They might be hard core procrastinators.

Whichever group they belong to, I hope they make their choices soon.

Burn, baby, burn

Dominik Z sent me this graphic, which makes the outcome of some matches even more unpredictable because they will probably be played in dangerously hot conditions. Do what you will with this scrap of data.

Cute

This is… interesting? The Belgian team released photos of their uniforms, with patterns inspired by Magritte.

On the one hand…

There is still one week until the first game and that is lots of time to get your Beautiful Pool entries to me before the deadline at midnight on 10 June.

But, on the other hand…

It’s been 3 weeks since I first made the entry forms available for download and quite a few of you haven’t made your choices yet. The pressure is starting to build. Don’t wait too long and then come crying to me if you miss the deadline.

I know what you are thinking…

You are wondering what Nate Silver’s World Cup model is predicting. Unfortunately, the results of his predictions for each of the Group Stage matches are behind a paywall. Fortunately for you, I paid to have a peek, and here’s what he says.

Each row corresponds to one of the Group stage matches. Here is what the columns mean. The “Group” column is obvious, and the “Date” is the date on which the match is scheduled. The 3rd and 5th columns shows the identifier for the teams playing in the match. The one that Nate thinks has the best chance of winning is in column 3, “Team”. The other is the “Opponent”. The 4th column, “p(Win)”, shows the percent probability that Team will beat Opponent. The 6th column, “p(Win)2”, is the probability that the Opponent will win. In each row, the probabilities in p(Win) and p(Win)2 sum to less than 100% and the difference is the probability that the game will end in a tie. I hope that helps.

For some of you, that may be just what you need to make your picks. Others might be overwhelmed with too much detailed info. Still others are probably saying, “What is this crap?”.

Whatever.

Just remember to send your entries to me before the deadline.

Nudge

In 2010, 33 Chilean miners were trapped underground for 70 days. In 2014, they made the greatest World Cup video ever.

I think we are on track to have the greatest Beautiful Pool ever, but I need your help. Get your picks to me: STAT.

There are now only 14 sleeps until the first kick-off. Do it now!

May I offer some assistance?

Awwww. The entry forms for the 2026 Beautiful Pool are starting to trickle in. It’s nice to know you guys are still out there. I’m especially happy that there are newbies getting in on the action. Welcome Rick, Theo, and John.

For those of you who are still cogitating, here’s some stuff that might help.

Joachim Klement is an analyst with Panmure Liberum, (a UK investment bank) who has developed a model that successfully predicted the winner of every World Cup since 2014. There is a history of investment banks trying to use their “expertise” to pick WC winners. I think it generally works about as well as their ability to pick stock market winners, but that’s a discussion for another time and another blog.

In his analysis of the 2026 competition, Joachim gives a lot of information that may (or may not) be helpful to you in making your picks. For example, this table shows the likely winners of each Group:

If you want to know more about how he came up with his predictions, you can read the whole 20 page report here:

It goes without saying, or it should, that I am not endorsing Joachim’s model. Use at your own risk!

The first match is now 3 weeks away. Time to start working on your picks.

And, please, tell your friends. What’s the worst that could happen? Even if they completely crash and burn, they come last and I return their entry fee. That’s not so bad.

Stuart

PS: I edited the Rules and Regulations to include PayPal as an additional means of payment. Note too that Newbie John told me the fees to use Wise can be prohibitive if you don’t have an account. Caveat emptor.

And we’re back.

The first game of the 2026 World Cup is a month away, and the beautifulpool.org rises from it’s slumber.

The “Rules and Regulations” page has been updated with everything you need to know to enter this year’s pool, including a link to download the entry form. It’s pretty much a rehash of previous pools, but, as they say, “why mess with success”. The link to the “Rules and Regulations” is at the top of every page on the website.

When you complete your entry form, please be on the lookout for glitches, bugs or even, yikes!, errors. FIFA keeps making the competition bigger so that they have even more opportunities to solicit bribes and/or fix the matches. That makes the entry forms a bit tricky. I think I got it right, but if you see something that doesn’t work, let me know right away so that I can fix it. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The previous version of the Beautiful Pool had 39 entries, but it would be nice, don’t you think, to have even more this time. If you follow my other website ( brannan.org ) you would have seen the teaser for the Beautiful Pool that I posted in April. The key point was that you don’t need to know anything about football/soccer to join in and have fun! Many previous participants knew little to nothing about the teams and I, myself, am officially the world’s least interested soccer fan,

So, don’t be intimidated and tell everyone you know!

The Beautiful Pool Hall of Fame

I have been doing this since 2010, and here is a listing of previous winners. As you can see, people with last names starting with “T” used to do pretty well, but they have been going through a rough bit, and haven’t won anything since 2018. Too bad for them, eh?

Important statement from head office

Beautiful Pool HQ released the following statement for immediate release:

No one affiliated with the Beautiful Pool will be accompanying the Canadian Prime Minister to the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington DC run by the evil FIFA organization and hosted by the corrupt US Executive Branch.

We do not take or give bribes.

However, we are starting to plan for the Beautiful Pool 2026 Edition, and hope you will join in.
